The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Other Stories is a delightful DVD from the best-selling books by Eric Carle. 2009 marks the 40th anniversary of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and to coincide with this the production company responsible for adapting Raymond Briggs’ The Snowman for the screen have faithfully brought five of Carle’s books to life on this DVD.

The DVD includes The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Very Quiet Cricket, The Mixed Up Chameleon, Papa, Please Get The Moon For Me and I See A Song. The Very Hungry Caterpillar, in particular, is such a classic and favourite story for so many children (and their parents) that it came as a huge relief that the DVD is entirely true to the full stories of all five books and brings Carle’s gorgeous illustrations to life.

Toby sat quietly transfixed by the DVD for the full 30 minutes, the combination of the familiarity of the stories with the animation and classical music had a wonderful calming influence. As a parent this is the type of DVD I’m really happy for Toby to watch and look forward to sharing it with his little sister.

I really enjoyed it too and was genuinely surprised to read in a recent Guardian interview with Carle that he found it "awful". This struck me as such a shame but did not stop me spending a very reasonable £4.68 buying it on Amazon for two different friends’ children to mark their second birthdays.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Other Stories DVD is a classic, timeless and faithful animated adaptation of Carle’s wonderful stories. The DVD is narrated by Juliet Stevenson and Roger McGough and lasts for 30 minutes.
