Retirement doesn’t necessarily mean retiring

Grandparent + babyIf your relative enjoys surfing the internet, hiking or any other activities, there’s no reason why they can’t continue to enjoy their passions for as long as possible. It’s recognised, though, that as some people get older they may benefit from some type of retirement living.

This usually means that they can continue with their busy social lives and other hobbies but help is close at hand, should it be needed. This type of arrangement suits all members of the family as it will give everyone peace of mind.

Some ideas for retirement

Age UK states that there are 10.8 million people in the UK over the age of 65 and this number is growing. If you want to help your parents/grandparents plan for their retirement, it’s never too early to start.

Retirement housing is a useful option as your relative will be able to live independently within a specially converted apartment that they own, but all of the mundane chores, including cleaning, exterior maintenance and security will be taken care of. Should your relative have an accident within the confines of their apartment, then someone will always be on hand to check on their health.

Your retirement, your choice

If you’ve always resisted the idea of this type of accommodation for a family member, think again. You’ll soon discover that it may be cheaper to invest in a retirement apartment rather than carrying out a home conversion on behalf of your relative. The issue of care and support for those who stay in their own houses is becoming more difficult and more expensive and sooner or later most people will need a little extra support.

Specialised later living apartments are stylish and well designed. If your parent is at all concerned about living within a community, they shouldn’t be alarmed. They can live their lives exactly how they wish and will be encouraged to continue their existing interests and take up some new ones.

The best time of life

Life for the over 65s can be a time of exploration and fun. So, the challenge of helping your family members plan their retirement should be seen as an opportunity for positive change rather than one of impending gloom.

Retirement is the ideal time for your relative to put their dreams and aspirations into practice. If their accommodation is sorted out come their retirement age then they can get on with enjoying their lives.
