Grow Big, Strange and Nasty Plants from the Great Little Trading Company

publication date: May 25, 2007

This great activity set contains everything the junior gardener needs to grow:
  • mimosa with its leaves which curl on touch;
  • sundew plant  which catches and digests insects with its colourful tentacles;
  • a square tomato – handy for sandwiches;
  • a giant pumpkin – ready for halloween;
  • giant sunflower.

The instructions are easy to follow (but younger gardeners will need help reading them and the booklet has some odd breaks in words) and include a chart showing when to plant the seeds and when to transfer them to the garden. The mimosa and sundew can be grown indoors any time of the year so it doesn’t matter when you give this as a present.

This is an activity for children who have a long attention span – you have to wait six months for the mimosa’s yellow flowers to appear. But gardening projects are a great way to teach children about nature and there are some nice little facts in the booklet that they’ll be able to share with friends.

Grow Big, Strange and Nasty Plants  is great for one child but could easily be shared among siblings, with each being responsible for one or two plants.
