Orbetello Camping, Tuscany

Between a lagoon and the sea, the Orbetello Camping Village in Tuscany is the opposite of the hustle and bustle of Rome. While there are historic sites nearby, this offers the chance to relax by the sea in luxury.

I stayed in a large safari tent with all the amenities of a hotel, from a toilet and shower to a cooking hob. Even better, there are tents with baths, dishwashers and four-poster beds. Some even have a separate mini tent next door for the kids. There are also lodges for hire plus areas to pitch your own tent. Half the site is reserved for those who want to bring their dogs along.

Strange as it may seem, the modern laundry blocks, designed by a top architect, were exquisite, built from wood to blend into the forested landscape.

Next to the resort is a long beach, a stretch of which is reserved for the campsite, with sun loungers and umbrellas so you can relax while your kids build sandcastles and swim. The other side of the campsite features a lagoon with flamingoes, and you can take a fun trip across the water by hovercraft ferry to Orbetello town.

The campsite has great facilities. There’s a semi-Olympic pool, a baby pool for the little ones, two Jacuzzis, a supermarket and BBQ grills for guests to use. Children from age four can hang out with the kids’ entertainment team, who put on a full programme of games and shows. The restaurant serves top-notch food, with a variety of fresh fish dishes and Italian cuisine, plus there’s a large wine and beer selection. Being Italian, they also have a ice cream parlour next to the restaurant, which is ideal for family treats after soaking up the Tuscan sun.

Orbetello is ideal place to chill out in Tuscany: child- and dog-friendly while enjoying the pleasures of glamping.
