Watermelon by Kate HanneyWatermelon is an amazing read – for both teens and adults. Author Kate Hanney uses a first person narrative to tell Mikey's story. An unloved child, rejected by his mother and brought up in a series of foster homes until he ends up in a care home and becomes exposed to violence and gang warfare, drug dealing, bullying and truancy.

Mikey is an intelligent boy without the advantages of a loving family and stable home life. What he discovers in the care home is friendship and loyalty but these both come with a very high price. Just when he thinks his life may be taking a turn for the better, favours are called in and Mikey finds himself in a dangerous world where death is the currency.

Kate Hanney writes with deep insightfulness and explores the mind of a disturbed 15 year old boy and the world of children in care and gang warfare with sensitivity and compassion. She has created credible characters who will stay with you long after reading... To say more would spoil the surprises that Watermelon has in store for the reader.

I'd defy anyone not to be moved by Watermelon.
