The Scarecrows' Wedding by Julia DonaldsonThe Scarecrows' Wedding by bestselling author Julia Donaldson and renowned illustrator Axel Scheffler is a delightful tale of two scarecrows, Betty O'Barley and Harry O'Hay who are planning the perfect wedding.

As with all Julia Donaldson's books (The Gruffalo is one of our favourites) the rhyming narrative is a perfect vehicle for her enchanting stories – and children and adults alike love them.

The scarecrows, Betty and Harry, are planning:

"The best wedding ever, the best wedding yet,

The wedding that no one will ever forget."

They find most of the things on their list on the farm  until Harry sets off to find the pink flowers which takes longer than anticipated and the farmer makes a scarecrow to replace him: Reginald Rake. The cad tries to lead Betty astray, culminating in her near death – but Harry saves her.

It is a charming story wittily told, my only complaint is the rather old fashioned theme and the stereotyping of the male and female scarecrows . Harriet, of course loved it.
