Patient Support Group Allergy UK estimates that up to 45 per cent of people have symptoms linked to food intolerance – headaches, fatigue, poor complexion, feeling bloated or just feeling below par.

Of course, feeling a bit uncomfortable is nothing compared to an allergy that leads to a life-threatening anaphylactic shock but avoiding the offending foods can make life far more enjoyable!

I didn’t know until about seven years ago that I had a problem with dairy products which was revealed by a special blood test but I certainly watched what I gave to my daughter to eat as her eczema was certainly exacerbated by certain foods.

Increasingly friends’ children have been diagnosed with allergies as well so a cookbook which covers all bases is definitely useful!

Dairy-free &/or Wheat-free &/or Soya-free BUT Always Totally Nut-free Family Cookbook is written by two mothers who both have children with allergies.

Educational writer Clare Constant teamed up with Suzanne Wood, former Home Economist of the Year, to produce a well-researched cookbook which give lots of tips and advice on replacing allergy-producing ingredients and making sure your family enjoys a well-balanced nutritious diet.

The recipes range from what to feed babies through to ideas for lunchboxes, main courses, puddings and tea-time treats. As someone who doesn’t eat meat (only fish and poultry) I was quite surprised by the addition of beef stock to what is a tasty recipe for tomato soup (minus the streaky bacon for me) but each to her own! I loved the Dhansak recipe!

Even if no one in your family suffers from a food allergy or intolerance, Dairy-free &/or Wheat-free &/or Soya-free BUT Always Totally Nut-free Family Cookbook is an excellent book to keep ready for preparing meals for guests who do!

The book has a foreward by Consutant Paediatrition Diab F Haddad who stresses the importance of getting a medical diagnosis for a child's allergy before imposing food restrictions which is reiterated by the authors throughout Dairy-free &/or Wheat-free &/or Soya-free BUT Always Totally Nut-free Family Cookbook.
