Bin the bucket and spade

publication date: May 16, 2007

An excellent reference guide which will give you plenty of ideas for less run of the mill family holidays. The holidays are listed 1 to 66 with a comprehensive checklist at the beginning of the book with a key to suitable age ranges from toddlers to teenagers, when to go and an indication of cost from 1 (budget) to  3 (expensive) and 4 for different price ranges within a category.

So you can find out about holidays in Cities with Sand – ever thought about New York for a beach holiday? – to Fun With Fiestas – carnival time in Venice to fireworks in Lewes. You are spoilt for choice and each chapter is packed with valuable information from when to go, pros and cons, and what to ask when you are booking plus website addresses and telephone numbers.

The one thing the book really needs is a full index for cross-referencing and quick and access to information.

My only other reservation is the chapter on Single Parent Holidays. As any lone parent will tell you, not many companies make allowances for one-parent families so perhaps the easiest solution is to find the type of holiday you want and see if you can team up with another parent. I don’t think single parents necessarily want to be lumped together as a category.
